The Medicine Ball Challenge

One in four adults experience mental illness, and many more of us know and care for people who do. Talking openly about how we feel can help.

The original med ball challenge involves cuffing a 3kg Medicine Ball to your wrist for 7 days. I will be completing this challenge for 3 months while I walk the length of the UK. It may not sound that heavy but being tied to the medicine ball continuously is a significant burden. The ball becomes a physical, visual and tangible representation of the invisible burden of mental health so many of us can experience.

The challenge raises money for the following charities. Any support you can offer will be gratefully received and split evenly between the causes.

Combat Stress

My Updates

Last Training Update

I have just finished my last training walk with full kit this weekend - a challenging few days along the South Downs. I’ve got a few equipment changes to make but I’ve figured out the best way to carry the medicine ball now (on top of my bag). Next week is a field exercise with the reserves and then on to the coronation rehearsals - then I’ll be on the trail!

1 Month To Go

I am now one month away from the start of my challenge. Please share this great poster my friend, LCpl Scott Dingley, has made for it - thank you!

1p per Mile

Hello everyone!

I’m currently training for my challenge to walk the length of the UK from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’ Groats in Scotland. While I complete this mammoth trek I will be taking part in the medicine ball challenge. I’ve been a part of the Army since 2019 as a reserve and served the last two years on a full time reserve contract. I will be completing this challenge when I come to the end of my full time commitment and revert back to a reserve in May 2023. I think that providing support to all of our services is essential; ABF Soldiers’ Charity and Combat Stress are great charities for providing help to those who need it in the armed forces and veteran communities, and being part of the army myself means that this is a cause I really believe in.

When I first mentioned my plan to my family we came up with the idea to ask for donations to match the miles I will cover; the idea being 1p per mile. After 1200 miles it would be a £12 donation. However, every penny counts and any money you can donate is fantastic and will go a long way.

Thank you for all your support and I hope I might see some of you along the way!
