The Frontline Walk 2023: The Western Front

I'm taking part in the Frontline Walk: The Western Front. I'll be trekking 100km following in the footsteps of those who fought on the Somme and Passchendaele battlefields during the First World War

I'll be doing this to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who fought in WWI whilst helping to support the soldiers and veterans of today.

It will be a physically and emotionally tough challenge, but I'm doing it all for a great cause: ABF The Soldiers' Charity, the National Charity of the British Army. They support soldiers, veterans and their families when they need it most.

Please cheer me on by making a donation towards my target.

My Updates

17/09/2023 Rutland Water walk - 23 miles done and survived !

Andrea, Sam and I set off early Sunday morning (thanks Andrea for driving, and Sam for dropping me off at home as legs would not have coped with that extra mile :-). We completed the full circuit taking in the Hambleton Peninsula . . . 23 miles on my fitbit!!! Great day out, beautiful scenery, the weather was kind . . .  and we discovered that YES! we can talk non-stop for 23 miles :-)

14/09/2023

Having had nearly a week off training, because I spent a lovely week seeing various friends and consuming copious amounts of food and drink . . . I am now 'back on it'. I ran 5km  on Tuesday, and did an 11 mile speed walk yesterday on hard terrain. Legs felt heavy on this morning's run, but taking comfort that there were no stops yesterday. I also walked at 4 miles per hour, so hoping the legs will 'enjoy' a slightly slower pace with breaks??? (fingers crossed emoji)

05/09/2023

Walked just over 11 miles this morning - along the bypass, so the right kind of terrain. . . but quite boring until one of the red arrows showed up.

02/09/2023

Did the Park run this morning. Then met Andrea for an afternoon stroll . . . . NOT!  . . . We did nearly 15 miles and oh was it hard work in the heat! A little off course as we chatted and both assumed the other knew where we were going . . . . Tactics discussed over a cooling pint when we made it back to Bracebridge Heath!

Park run 26/08/2023

Had a 'family park run' today.
Matthew and Ellen, Darren, Alfie and I all completed the Boultham Park course . . .  younger legs are too fast for me! :-)

16/08/2023

Walked 16 miles today. Part hard surface and part on the Viking Way. No stops. Legs definitely ache.

09/08/2023

Another lovely walk - 8.5 miles to a friend's house, partly along the Spires and Steeples route (a lot drier than when we attempted the full route in 2019 when it rained for all 27 miles!).
Refreshed with coffee, sandwiches and a good ol' catch up before making the 8.5 mile walk home again. Legs survived! Slept well :-)

07/08/2023

A beautiful start to the week - great weather (at last!) and a morning walk of 8.5 miles . . . legs are definitely feeling stronger.

w/c 31/07/2023

A better week with a 3.25 mile run! . . . an evening 9 mile walk with Andrea and a daytime walk by myself of 11 miles!

Then on Saturday, Andrea and I had a very soggy 16 miles in the rain – ever hopeful the sun would shine, we had an ice cream at the halfway mark . . . but still ended up with our hoods up on the way home . . . waterproofs work though 😊

w/c 24/07/2023

. . . only managed a couple of 3 mile runs this week . . . and a 5 mile walk w friends – really need to step up the training!

w/c 17/07/2023

Had a lovely 10 mile walk with Andrea on Wednesday evening, but decided I needed some longer miles in my legs so went for a walk on Thursday too. I ended up doing 18 miles ! – about 3 miles further than planned, as I had to divert to avoid a 'pack' of intimidating cows :-)
