2024 TCS London Marathon

Thank you for visiting my page

I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of The Army Benevolent Fund and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in TCS London Marathon 2024. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'donate' button. The more people that know about ABF, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

I have only recently left the Army having spent 17 years as an officer within The Yorkshire Regiment. During that time, I saw the many great things that the ABF does for the soldiers and I feel immensely proud to now be able to do my bit and give something back to this charity.

I love endurance sports, mainly triathlon, but I come from a running background and there is something about the marathon that is such a draw. I have tried for years to get a place on the London Marathon; now that time has come I want to train harder than I ever have before - raising as much money as I can for this amazing cause in the process.

My Updates

[08/01/24]

First update in a few weeks. Training has had to pause due to a back injury! I was laying place mats on Christmas Eve of all things and felt my back go. It is an old reoccurring injury that seems to have reappeared for some reason but I have been here before. I had to take a couple of weeks off trainings, just doing some S&C and light runs/walks where I could. Thankfully, it seems to have now shifted and feels good again so I expect to be back to full training this week.

Winter Training [11/12/23]

The worst thing about signing up to a spring marathon is that the training is done over the winter months! There has been a couple of mornings over the last few weeks where I have set the alarm early and got up to get my run in, only to leave the house and almost slide down the drive on the ice. Thankfully no injuries but I didn't want to take any chances so promptly went back inside and rescheduled for over a lunchtime, when the temperature had warmed up a bit and there was no longer ice on the ground!

Thank you to me latest donators! You are amazing and it's very much appreciated.

Lake Fartleks [27/11/23]

I have now completed my first proper training week that had some decent runs in it. One of the runs was a fartlek session around a local lake. The plan was to run hard for 3-mins then take 60s to recover each time. The circumference of this lake seemed to take me about 3-mins to run round it so it worked perfectly. It was very cold as I had to squeeze the session in very early so I could then meet some family commitments.

Training has begun [20/11/23]

Went on my first training run this morning. I've been working hard on strength and conditioning up to now with a bit of cycling too. Hopefully that work will allow me to train consistently now without injury, although there are many months between now and April. Happy to get the first run completed but it wasn't pretty. Slow and a few aching joints (probably due to the lack of running...) but its done and the start of five month training journey! A couple more runs to do this week as well as some cycling and the strength and conditioning that I've built as a habit into my daily routine now.

Thank you to my latest donators!

Thank you so much to those who have recently donated! This fundraising page has well and truly started now and I am nearly 1/8th into my target. It would be great to get to £500 by the end of the year!

Training is going well but I haven't started running yet. I'm currently using the time to build up a strong core and allow some niggles and minor injuries to heal. Strength and conditioning is my focus with some cycling and lots of walking. When I start running again in a few weeks, it shouldn't be too much of a shock to the body and when the formal training programme starts in December, things will ramp up considerably.

Kick off!

My charity page is now up and running (no pun intended) and I have my first donation in already.

Proper training has not started yet, that will come in November. In the meantime I am doing some cycling and LOTS of strength and conditioning!
