The Medicine Ball Challenge

Even in 2021, there is still a significant stigma attached to mental health problems, including stress, anxiety, PTSD and Depression. I am taking on the Medicine Ball challenge to help break these stigmas and get people talking about their mental health. It's ok to speak up and say i'm not ok.

The challenge involves cuffing a 3kg Medicine Ball to my wrist for 7 days. It may not sound that heavy but being tied to the medicine ball continuously for 7 days is a significant burden. The ball becomes a physical, visual and tangible representation of the invisible burden of mental health so many of us can experience.

The challenge raises money for the following charities. Any support you can offer will be gratefully received and split evenly between the causes.

Cuffed in Church

Never thought I’d see the day I would be standing at the front of my church in handcuffs! 🙈

Day #7

Day #7 - My final day of the Medicine Ball challenge did not fail to disappoint as the fundraising total continues to rise.

This morning I spoke to my fellow parishioners about this weeks challenge and how wonderful it has been. Home for lunch then a visit with our good friends @mamadogifts for an overdue catch up after Kyle unlocked me from my challenge.

As I put the photo collage together of my unlocking for this post I couldn’t help but notice the coincidence of our positioning at our mantelpiece against the plaque @va1erie83 bought me after Faith (her Goddaughter) was born. I don’t think she realised at the time how much encouragement I would gain by this daily reminder in our living room!

A big thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and everyone of you who has donated, encouraged and supported me throughout the last week. I have been utterly overwhelmed and humbled by the response I have received and thank everyone who contacted me personally to spur me on!

I want to wish Shirley Agnew the best of luck as she takes on the challenge from tomorrow! Handover pics to follow 😂

Thanks to everyone for your kindness, generosity and support so far.

Gardening with Bob the Medicine Ball

Day #6

Today’s activities were certainly more taxing than days 1-5!

This morning we watched Max’s football in Armagh then home for lunch. Trailing the ball around while I tidied up, emptied the dishwasher and made lunch was awkward, cumbersome and quite frankly exhausting. End-of-term-itis has well and truly kicked in!🥱

The afternoon saw the final tidy up of the garden before winter. While Kyle and Max were at football I got the grass cut, roses pruned and general dead-heading, weeding and tidying before the cold, dark evenings descend upon us. 🌷👩🏻‍🌾🏡

A welcomed break mid afternoon when my mother in law arrived enabling a cuppa and catch up as we never get a proper chance to talk in the middle of the busyness of the week!☕️🍪

This evening we joined our good friends to celebrate their son, Wilson’s 4th birthday. The company, hospitality and craic as always was great! 🎉🎂🎈🎁

Thanks to everyone for your kindness, generosity and support so far.

Some keepy uppys between classes!

A special catch up 💗

Medicine Ball Quiz

Day #5

Another phenomenal response today as I chased the £2K mark.

This morning I hosted a Medicine Ball Quiz and a staggering 464 students logged on to participate. It didn’t matter what knowledge the students had to begin with - its purpose was to inform and provide knowledge of mental health and suicide and the platform (Quizizz) that I used made it fun, engaging and provided them with the right answers even if they were wrong. It’s amazing what you can achieve with teenagers when you dangle a bar of chocolate in front of them!

The remainder of the school day saw some medicine ball keepy uppys as well as some discussion with students in the learning support hub and around the school. I really feel that I have gained more from this week than anyone else and ending this half of term with such a buzz around school was energising. The dialogue that it has opened up and the ability to challenge the prejudice of mental health stigma has been so rewarding.

This evening I headed out for dinner with some friends who I never get the chance to see anymore and to surprise my best friend @va1erie83 for her birthday. A wonderful night of cocktails dinner and craic. The medicine ball got quite the audience and I am heading home feeling that I’ve had a cathartic offload!

Thanks to everyone for your kindness, generosity and support so far.

A problem shared is a problem halved

#itsgoodtotalk

Day #4

Today has been fairly quiet in terms of activities but not without opportunity. Given the fatigue in my left arm I was glad to be sitting down with a cuppa by 8.30pm, a rare occurrence may I add! ☕️🍪

In school I received so much encouragement and even managed to shoehorn in some mental health awareness chat with pupils in Year 8-10 as I taught moments, sound and did some forces and energy revision. My Year 9’s fondly named the medicine ball Bob, quite fitting since I was using it as a pendulum on Monday 😂

After school I stopped in at M&S to return some items and I got some enquiring looks from onlookers in the queue. I then heard a whisper of “There’s that teacher from Wallace I was telling you about”. Great, the word is getting out!  👍🏻

This evening we got the final homework’s before half term under our belts 🙌🏻 and despite our weariness Max shared the burden of my challenge as we walked Sadie before BB. I guess a problem shared really is a problem halved.

My day concluded with a coffee date with one of my best friends, a fellow teacher and life juggling Mum! With one day to go until half term it was an essential visit to catch up, chat, put the world of education to rights and even offload with someone I can trust and who knows what it is to be juggling some of the same balls as me. #freetherapy 🥰

I am so thankful for all my close friends who have journeyed through many challenges and difficult times and counselled me along the way. It means so much to be able to confide in people who care about me who  understand and can relate to the challenges I meet in my daily life but never judge! 💗

Thanks to everyone for your kindness, generosity and support so far.

Energy Transducers with Y8

Mess with Mrs D and feel the wrath of the medicine ball 😬

My strength comes from above

Day #3

Today I have been blown away by the support and encouragement I have received!

My students have been so willing to listen and engage in discussion. I have never had so many offers of practical help from students in my life; from holding doors open to carrying bags and more eagerly offers to carry the medicine ball. They have been so generous with their encouragement and giving - one student donated his weekly pocket money which even made me cry 🥲 #proud

The medicine ball made an excellent visual aid when learning about transducers with Year 8 and it was the main attraction for discussion with Year 9 when completing our crash bang experiment to calculate the speed of sound!

After school I popped along to Junior @wallacehighsu to share how my faith has helped me with my personal mental health struggles and I felt privileged to have a room full of students pray for me and this challenge! Fitting on a day where my focus was Faith.

The ball and I finished the day back in @foundry_strength_conditioning where we sweated off the stresses of the day. As always the banter did not disappoint! 💪🏻🏋🏼‍♀️ and it certainly didn’t stop David Armstrong taking the mick out of my pink gloves!

Cannot wait to say what Day #4 has to bring …

Strong Body, Strong Mind, Strong Life

Day #2

Another successful day of the MBC.
The morning was a run around school with the charity committee for their weekly collection which has boosted my total and given me the opportunity to open more dialogue and answer some interesting questions. A big thanks to all the staff and pupils of @wallacehighlisburn for their kindness, encouragement and generosity.

The afternoon presented me with the opportunity to speak to the @wallacehighsu to raise awareness and highlight the fact that indeed Christians are not exempt from mental health issues and to encourage them in their journey of faith.

This evening I got the opportunity to work off the stresses of today with a wonderful coach @alexhammondfitness and my SGPT friends. Plenty of laughs were had and thankfully not all at my expense.

Thanks to all who have shown their support so far!

Physics lessons with a twist!

Carrying out a Simple Harmonic motion practical with Year 14. Probably not what they expected first thing on a Monday morning 😂

Day #1

If there had been any doubt that the MBC would be an easy challenge then that would be a no!

That said; a wonderful day it has been … teaching SHM using a medicine ball is certainly not an approach I have used in my 16 year teaching career to date. But what a conversation starter …!

I have been overwhelmed by the support received from the staff and pupils of @wallacehighlisburn.

I received some strange looks from students in the playground and when out tonight walking Sadie but luckily the onlookers eagerly approached and opened the door to some valuable seed planting and thought provocation.

Excited already to see what day two will bring! Watch this space …
