The Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch

Thursday 18th April 2024

Tickets for the city's hottest event - raising funds to meet the current urgent need to support veterans of HM Armed Forces into employment on sale now

The Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch is one of the City of London’s biggest fundraisers supporting all members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces. This is achieved through the three National Service Charities;

The Army Benevolent Fund, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

A proportion of the funds raised will focus on a specific and worthwhile theme: employability. Aligning the Lunch with the Civic and Mayoral theme of employment.

By attending The Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch, you have helped:

The Army Benevolent Fund is the national charity of the British Army, providing a lifetime of support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families when they are in need.

The Army Benevolent Fund works hard to ensure that all soldiers and veterans of the British Army, and their immediate families, are afforded the independence and dignity they deserve. We make grants to individuals and to a wide range of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world.

Since 1944, we've been at the forefront of support for the Army family. We are one of the largest founders in the sector, reaching 65,000 people and funding 66 other charities and organisations during FY 21/22.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity is the principal charity of the Royal Navy. It works hard to ensure that sailors, marines and their families exist in a world in which they remain supported, for life. Throughout the last decade, the RNRMC has distributed over £60 million across the Naval Service. From life changing grants during times of immediate need, to smaller deployment grants that aide morale and retention - the RNRMC works hard to ensure that no one is forgotten.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity exists to help reduce some of the consequences and disadvantages that come from service in the Royal Navy, as well to honour that service to the nation. The intense operational nature of their work, the long periods of separation from their families and people’s experiences ashore and afloat can have huge repercussions, sometimes quickly and often many years later. No matter what, the Charity is primed and ready, with others, to help. Our defining vision is of a world where every sailor, marine and their families are valued and supported, for life.

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund is the leading welfare charity supporting current and former members of the RAF, their partners and families, providing practical, emotional and financial support, whenever they need us. We are committed to getting them through the toughest times, whatever life may send their way. From the youngest child to the oldest veteran, we’ll consider any request for assistance, however big or small, providing a tailor-made approach to each individual situation.
Last year we spent over £21 million supporting more than 53,000 current and former members of the RAF and their families. However, we know there are many more people who would benefit from our help and personal pride or lack of awareness must not prevent members of the RAF Family contacting us if they are in need. It is our mission to find those people and ensure they get the support they need.

One of the biggest inhibitors to veterans getting into the world of work and sticking at it is pain. The causal factors involved are complex, whether physical or psychological. King Edward VII Hospital’s Centre for Veterans’ Health has developed – and tested – a six-month-long Pain Management Programme specifically for veterans, designed to help prepare them for employment. The Lunch will fund up to 18 veterans on this programme each year from 2019 – 2021, as part of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity grant-giving. It will cost up to £120,000 each year (£6,500 per individual), which will still leave us with a significant sum to fund other programmes that support employment and employability and the wider work of the three National Service Charities.

We’re the RAF Benevolent Fund, and we’re here to support people who are serving – or have served – and their families, when they need it most. We provide the financial, emotional and practical support that helps people live with the dignity and independence they deserve. Together, we’ll continue to be here for as long as they need us. In 2021 we spent over £22 million supporting more than 44,600 members of the RAF Family.
